SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team clinched a series victory over Lamar on Sunday at Sully, earning a 12-2 finale win behind 17 hits and a complete-game effort from
Bernie Martinez.
HOW IT WAS WON
Tyler Pettit put the Broadway Birds (15-11, 5-4 SLC) on top early with his first career home run. The blast scored
Sean Arnold and gave UIW a 2-0 advantage in the second inning.
The Broadway Birds doubled their lead in the third, chasing opposing pitcher Jason Blanchard off the mound after just 2.1 innings of work.
Mark Whitehead led off with a double to left center, before a
Kyle Bergeron single up the middle sent him home. Two batters later,
Eddy Gonzalez drove Bergeron in with a double down the left field line.
After four scoreless innings, the Beaumont Birds (5-19, 1-8 SLC) broke up the shutout with a two-run home run in the fifth.
UIW responded with three in the bottom of the inning to secure a 7-2 advantage. The Broadway Birds loaded the bases with just one out, before a wild pitch allowed Gonzalez to come in. Two batters later,
Ridge Rogers notched a two-RBI single to left.
The Broadway Birds added three additional insurance runs in the seventh. Rogers and Whitehead both scored on a double off the bat of
David Anaya, before Gonzalez sent Anaya home with a single to short.
UIW continued to pile on in the eighth as Rogers completed a 4-for-4 performance with an RBI single to shallow right. Whitehead followed with an RBI single up the middle and the game was called.
LEADERS
Rogers led the Broadway Birds with a perfect 4-for-4 day, 3 RBIs, 1 walk and 1 run scored. Gonzalez went 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs and a run scored, while Whitehead hit 2-for-3 with 2 runs and an RBI. Anaya batted 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs and a run scored, while
Ryan Flores turned in a 2-for-2 day and a run.
Payton Robertson paced Lamar with a 1-for-3 effort and a two-run home run.
Martinez (3-2) earned the win, holding the Beaumont Birds to just 2 runs on 3 hits in a complete-game showing. He struck out 4 and walked 2.
Blanchard (0-4) took the loss, surrendering 4 runs on 6 hits through 2.1 innings on the hill. He fanned 2 batters.
NOTEABLES
Rogers' 4-for-4 performance marks the fourth time this season he has gone perfect at the plate. He also achieved the feat against North Dakota State, No. 8 Texas A&M and Northern Illinois.
With a 2-for-5 effort on Sunday, Anaya has now hit safely in 19 consecutive games. Bergeron is riding the team's second-longest hitting streak at 11 games.
