SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team dropped its fifth straight game and Lamar earned its first Southland Conference victory of the season on Friday night as the visiting Cardinals captured a 9-3, series-opening win at Sully.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Broadway Birds (13-11, 3-4 SLC) fell into a 2-0 hole in the first. The Beaumont Birds (5-17, 1-6 SLC) drew a leadoff walk, before a pair of singles put one on the board. The inning appeared to be over when a slow roller to second had double play written all over it, but a delayed initial throw allowed the batter to reach first safely and resulted in a second run for Lamar.
After being retired in order in the bottom of the first, UIW's bats came alive in the second inning.
David Anaya opened the frame off with a single through the left side and
Lee Thomas drove him in with a monster double to deep right center.
The bottom of the third started in similar fashion as
Ridge Rogers reached first with an infield single. Two batters later,
Kyle Bergeron, punched a single up the middle, advancing Rodgers to third. Anaya subsequently reached on a throwing error, allowing Rodgers to plate the tying run. A Whitehead single to left sent Bergeron home and gave the Broadway Birds the lead.
Lamar took advantage of a leadoff double and a single to notch things up again in the fourth.
Two innings later, the Beaumont Birds recaptured the lead. Robin Adames singled through the left side and stole second, before scoring on a single from Cole Secrest through the right side.
Secrest struck again in the eighth, putting the nail in the coffin with a no-doubt, three-run home run over the left field wall that gave Lamar a 7-3 advantage.
The Beaumont Birds added a pair in the ninth and held on for the victory.

Whitehead led the UIW offense with a 1-for-2 outing, 2 walks and an RBI.
