SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team held Maine to just three hits on Tuesday night, earning a 2-0 win behind strong pitching from
Jake Zatopek and
Tyler Miller at Daniel Sullivan Field.
HOW IT WAS WON
For the 11
th time this season the Cardinals (11-6, 3-0 SLC) scored first when
Lee Thomas' double off the wall in right center sent
Kyle Bergeron home.
UIW took advantage of miscues by the Black Bears (4-11, 0-0 AEC) to add an insurance run in the fourth.
Ryan Gonzalez was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Zatopek got the start and completely shut down Maine's offense. Not a single Black Bear base runner reached second under his watch.
Zatopek handed the ball over to
Tyler Miller in the seventh and he was equally as effective. He surrendered just one hit over the final three innings and shut the door in the ninth, striking out two of the final three batters to seal the victory.
LEADERS
Thomas led the Cardinals with a 3-for-3 outing, an RBI double and a walk.
Tyler Pettit and
Ryan Flores each notched a pair of hits, while Bergeron finished 1-for-4 with a run scored.
No batter for the Black Bears registered a multi-hit outing.
Zatopek (1-1) earned his first collegiate win, allowing 2 hits through 6.0 innings on the mound. He struck out 1 and walked 1. Miller picked up his first save of the season, allowing 1 hit through 3.0 innings of relief. He fanned 3 batters without surrendering a walk.
Alex McKenney (0-1) took the loss, surrendering 2 runs on 7 hits through 5.0 innings of work. He struck out 1 batter and walked 2.
