SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Junior forward
Charles Brown III shot 50 percent en route to a game- and career-high 26 points, but visiting Southeastern Louisiana outscored the University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball, 46-31, in an 86-68 win Wednesday evening from the McDermott Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first half featured 19 lead changes, as the largest lead for any team was four, as
Shawn Johnson's two free throws gave UIW (5-16 overall, 0-11 SLC) a 30-26 lead with 5:09 left in the opening half. SLU (15-10, 9-3) used a 6-0 run to take a two-point lead, only to see UIW tie the game with 4:09 to go in the first half. A Brown III three-pointer was sandwiched between a pair of Lion triples, as SLU entered halftime leading the Cardinals, 40-37.
SLU came out of the gate with a pair of three-pointers from Joshua Filmore to take a quick nine-point lead a minute-and-a-half into the second half. SLU outscored the Cardinals by 15 points in the second half, as the Lions shot 48 percent (15-for-31) from the floor and 53 percent (8-for-15) from beyond the arc in the second half alone. In comparison, the Cardinals shot 38 percent (11-for-29) and 33 percent (3-for-9), respectively. Points off turnovers were 12-0 in favor of the Lions.
LEADERS
Brown III's 26 points led all players, while his eight rebounds led the Cardinals. Johnson followed with 23 points. No other Cardinal scored more than four points.
Filmore paced the SLU offense with 21 points, as he was 7-for-11 from the floor, all from long range. Marlain Veal scored 17 points, followed by 15 from Jordan Capps and 14 from Moses Greenwood.
