UIW hosts UTA in Sunday afternoon showdown

SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team looks to defend its home court when the Cardinals host UT-Arlington at 2 p.m. (CT) Sunday in the McDermott Center.

A STARR IS BORN
  • Freshman forward Starr Omozee has enjoyed a magnificent beginning to her collegiate career.
  • The Pflugerville HS product has produced three double-doubles while leading the team in minutes (28.3), points (9.3) and rebounds (6.8) per game.
  • Against GCU (11/9/18), she posted 11 points and 15 rebounds, becoming the first freshmansince Imani Robinson (2016) to record a double-double. Omozee and Robinson are the only two to accomplish this feat in UIW DI history.
  • Omozee set multiple season highs in her first game at the McDermott Center (vs. Houston, 11/16/18), scoring her second double-double (19 pts, 10 rebs) and making multiple threes in a game for the first time.
  • She set the record for most double-doubles by a freshman in a single season (since joining DI) in just six games played when she hung 10 points and 11 rebounds on Weber State (11/21).
  • Omozee also collected a season-best six offensive rebounds as a part of UIW's record-breaking 28 offensive rebound performance against Houston.
 
GELLING ON OFFENSE
  • Junior guard Angelica Wiggins leads the team with 11 three pointers made.
  • She is coming into form in a Cardinal jersey, averaging 11.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, one block and an asisst in her last four games.
  • She enjoyed a breakout game against Weber State (11/21), pouring in 19 points on four made three-pointers. It's the most points a Cardinal has scored this season.
  • The Toronto native has made multiple three-pointers in four of her last five games played.
  • Wiggins leads the team with five blocks this season.
 
JUNIORS LEAD THE WAY
  • Junior forward Lunden Henry transferred to UIW from Moberly Area Community College, a team that went 32-1 last season and earned a 3rd overall seed in the NJCAA Division 1 national tournament.
  • Since arriving in the Alamo City, Henry has established herself as the Cardinal's leading presence in the paint. She averages 8.6 points per game on a team-leading .443 shooting, while pulling in an average of 5.6 rebounds per contest.
  • Lunden leads the team with 18 offensive rebounds this season, tied with Omozee.
  • Junior guard Imani Robinson is showing her passing skills, leading the team with 16 assists.
  • She is averaging 8.3 points, 3.8 boards and 2.3 assists per game while leading the team with 17 free throws made.
  • Robinson also leads the team with 11 steals.
 
NONCONFERENCE GUANTLET
  • The non-conference schedule is loaded with notable opposition.
  • Nine of the 11 non-conference opponents are coming off winning seasons.
  • The season opener was at Arizona State, a team that reached the second round of the 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament.
  • That was one of two games against 2018 NCAA Tournament teams, as UIW visits Minnesota on Dec. 5.
  • South Dakota, Houston, and Rice each took part in the WNIT.
  • Weber State (WBI) also saw postseason play in 2017-18.
  • UIW is the only team in the Southland Conference not to schedule a non-Division I opponent this season.
 
SCOUTING UTA
  • The Mavericks enter play with a 3-2 record after besting San Francisco on the road, 80-73, last Sunday (Nov.25)
  • They are led offensively by senior guard Cierra Johnson, who averages 12.8 points per game.
  • UTA utilizes a powerful offense, averaging 76.6 points per game, the second highest scoring offense in the Sun Belt Conference.
  • The Mavericks lead the all-time series 2-1, after earning a 61-48 victory in Arlington last season (Nov. 11, 2017).
 
UP NEXT
The Cardinals will embark on their final road trip of the non-conference schedule, going to Minnesota to face the Gophers on Wednesday at noon, before heading east to play UMASS on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
