HOUSTON, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball looks for their first road win of the season, when the Cardinals face HBU Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. from Sharp Gym.

FIRST TIP

UIW leads the all-time series, 20-3, but the two teams split the season series last year, with the home team victorious each time. UIW knocked off the Huskies, 82-77, on Jan. 14, while the Huskies got even on Feb. 4, 84-70.

SCOUTING THE HBU HUSKIES

207-18: 4-16 overall, 0-7 SLC
Last Game: L 86-81 vs. McNeese (1/20)
Head Coach: Ron Cottrell
Key Players:
#5 David Caraher – 18 GP, 15.4 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 39.5 3PT%, 38 ASTS, 14 STLS
#0 Ian DuBose – 20 GP, 12.8 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 37.8 3PT%, 34 ASTS, 7 BLKS, 27 STLS
#30 Braxton Bonds – 20 GP, 8.9 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 101 ASTS, 38 STLS
Summary: Another team on the same trajectory as the Cardinals, HBU has also lost nine straight, including an 86-81 home defeat to McNeese last Saturday night. The Huskies, playing the 185th most difficult schedule in Division I (second in the SLC behind New Orleans), have been without the services of Preseason Second Team All-SLC performer, Josh Ibarra, for the last 11 games. Ibarra leads the team in points (16.0), rebounds (10.0), and field goal percentage (55.2).

Freshman David Caraher, who dropped 30 points against the Cowboys last weekend, is second on the team with 15.4 points per game. His 39.5 three-point percentage is tops on the team, while his 34 triples made are 10 shy of leader Jalon Gates' mark. Braxton Bonds' 5.1 assists per game rank him third in the conference. As a team, the Huskies lead the conference in both rebounding offense (40.2) and offensive rebounds (16.2 orpg), are 11th in scoring margin (-6.7), and 4th in rebounding margin (+3.1).

THE CARDINAL FILE

2017-18: 5-12 overall, 0-7 SLC
Last Game: L 74-70 at New Orleans (1/20)
Head Coach: Ken Burmeister
Key Players:

#4 Christian Peevy – 17 GP, 10.4 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 81.9 FT%, 8 BLKS
#41 Shawn Johnson – 17 GP, 9.8 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 34.1 3PT%, 32 ASTS, 28 BLKS, 29 STLS

It was the fifth-straight game without Preseason First Team All-Conference selection, Jalin Hart.

Johnson's 6.5 rebounds per game puts him 9th in the conference, while his 1.6 blocked shots per contest is good for 6th. As a team, the Cardinals continue to lead the conference in blocks (5.18 per game) and free throw percentage (73.0), while they're 10th in scoring margin (-5.2) and 12th in rebounding margin (-3.5).
