SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Junior
Charles Brown III and freshman
Keaton Hervey combined for 64 percent of the University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball's scoring in their 90-69 loss over visiting Lamar Wednesday night from the McDermott Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lamar (11-8, 3-3 SLC) scored the game's first six points before UIW's (5-11, 0-6) Brown III swished a three-pointer. The host Cardinals came as close as a point (11-10) following a
Sam Burmeister layup, before the visiting Cardinals scored seven unanswered to take an 18-10 lead at the midway point of the first half.
Cody Graham's steal resulting in a Hervey trey brought UIW within five. UIW cut the deficit to four, but, once again, Lamar put distance between the two teams, as three layups and a three-pointer by Jordan Foster put Lamar ahead by 11 (28-17) with seven minutes left in the opening half.
UIW battled back and a Brown III layup at the 3:16-mark brought UIW within seven (37-30), but Lamar closed the half outscoring the Cards, 10-4, to take a 13-point lead into the locker room.
In the second half, Lamar picked up where the first half left off, as it used a 13-8 run to take an 18-point lead, culminated by a three-point play from Colton Weisbrod. The closest UIW came was 14 points with nine-and-a-half left in regulation, as Lamar outscored UIW, 23-16, the remainder of the game.
LEADERS
Brown III tied his career high of 24 points for the second time in the last three games, as he went 9-for-15 from the floor, 2-for-2 from beyond the arc, and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe in 37 minutes. Hervey came off the bench to score a career-high 20 points on 5-of-10 shooting, 2-for-3 from long range, and 8-of-9 from the line.
Konstantin Kulikov set new career highs in points (6) and minutes played (17), as he went a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor. UIW as a team shot 47 percent from the floor.
Preseason First Team All-Conference selection, Weisbrod, led all players with 26 points, while Josh Nzeakor posted a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds. Nick Garth came off the bench for 25 points. The Cardinals shot 49 percent from the floor as a team.
Turnovers for both teams were fairly low (12 for UIW and 7 for LU), but one key stat was points off turnovers: 18 for Lamar and only five for UIW.
