SAN ANTONIO, TX – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team could not avoid the series sweep as they dropped Saturday's series finale 6-1 against ACU at Cardinals Field.
Jessica Rodriguez made the start in the pitching circle for UIW (8-34, 3-15 SLC) and she lasted only 1.0 inning giving up four earned runs on four hits while also issuing two walks. The big blow in the first inning came when Holly Neese singled through the left side scoring two runs to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead.
Several batters later, Braegon Hamilton scored on an illegal pitch from Rodriguez to increase the lead to 4-0. In the sixth inning, ACU added two more runs on RBI doubles from Peyton Hendrick and Neese.
The Cardinals did get on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning after
Alex Alonzo singled up the middle to score
Victoria Bratcher.
Delaney Guzman made two very good plays defensively that saved at least one run for UIW.
Bridget Stein was the bright spot for UIW as she came in for relief of Rodriguez to start the second inning. She finished the game allowing just one earned run on nine hits. Sidney Holman collected her 17
th win of the season after going the full 7.0 innings allowing just one earned run and three hits while also striking out five batters.
Alonzo led the Cardinals at the plate with the one RBI and the team only had three hits. Neese led the Wildcats with three hits and three RBI while Hendrick added four hits and two RBI.
