SAN ANTONIO, TX – The bats went silent for the University of the Incarnate Word, as they were defeated in both games of Friday's doubleheader against Abilene Christian University at Cardinals Field.
Bridget Stein got the start for UIW (8-33, 3-14 SLC) in game one and she had her best performance of the season going the complete 7.0 innings allowing just two earned runs on nine hits. The Wildcats jumped on the board quickly after Taylor Brown led off the game with a triple, and she scored on an RBI single up the middle from Peyton Hendrick.
Abilene Christian (25-16, 14-3 SLC) picked up another run in the third inning when Hendrick hit a solo shot to left field. The Wildcats added two more runs in the fourth when Kaleign Singleton singled down the left field line scoring two runs to give Abilene Christian 4-0.
The Cardinals put three runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth starting when
Mikaela Flores reached on an error, which allowed
Christy Trevino and
Victoria Bratcher to score. Later in the inning,
Monica Flores singled to center field to score Flores. Unfortunately for UIW, they could not figure out Hannah Null in the pitchers circle for the Wildcats as she shutout the Cardinals in the final three innings picking up her third save of the year.
UIW had four hits as a team and they were led by
Monica Flores who had the RBI. Hendrick led the Wildcats with two hits and two RBI. Sidney Holman gets the win for Abilene Christian after going 4.0 innings allowing two earned runs on four hits.
Joanna Valencia started the second game for UIW and she struggled in the first inning as the Wildcats scored three runs to start the ballgame. In the fifth, Abilene Christian added two more runs to take a 5-0 advantage. The Wildcats busted open the game in the sixth inning after a three run blast from Brianna Barnhill and they would go on to score four runs in the inning to take a 9-0 lead.
The Cardinals did add two runs in the bottom of the inning to avoid ending the game after five innings.
Alex Alonzo had a pinch hit double to score Flores. Abilene Christian picked up two more runs to take an 11-2 victory in game two.
The Cardinals had just three hits in the game and Alonzo had the team's lone RBI. Barnhill led the Wildcats with four hits and five RBI. Null went the full distance in the pitching circle and she was great allowing just three hits and no earned runs.
