NEW ORLEANS, La. – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team was no match for New Orleans on Thursday night, dropping an 84-58 decision at Lakefront Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals (6-17, 4-8 SLC) were solid in the opening quarter and trailed the Privateers (12-10, 7-5 SLC) by just one point, 22-21, at the end of one.
After racking up 21 points in the opening frame, UIW scored just 13 over the second and third quarters combined. The Cardinals committed 14 turnovers in the first half, while New Orleans failed to turn the ball over once.
UIW fought back in the fourth quarter, but the early damage was too much to overcome as the Privateers cruised to victory.
THE BREAKDOWN
The Cardinals shot 37.5 percent from the floor and 31.6 percent from three-point range, while allowing 47.9 percent and 50.0 percent respectively. New Orleans dished out 18 assists, while committing only three turnovers. In stark contrast, UIW registered just nine assists and finished with 19 giveaways.
The Privateers earned a 25-4 advantage on points off turnovers, a 37-16 edge on bench points, a 44-26 advantage on points in the paint, a 10-4 edge on fast break points and a 17-12 advantage on second chance points.
LEADERS
Imani Robinson paced the Cardinals with 20 points, eight rebounds and an assist.
Celia Garcia Paunero scored 14 points, pulled down seven boards and contributed four assists. Robinson and Garcia Paunero combined to shoot 15-of-35, while the rest of the team went 9-of-29.
Randi Brown (21 points), Kayla Mundy (10 rebounds) and Mariah Wright (four assists) led New Orleans.
