SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Abilene Christian scored twice in each half as the Wildcats came to Benson Stadium and spoiled The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer's Senior Day with a 4-2 victory Friday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
ACU (8-10-0 overall, 6-5-0 SLC) drew first blood in the 26
th minute, as Shay Johnson scored on a pass inside the box from Megan Bauer.
Ana Rodriguez tied the match at one-all seven minutes later, as she scored off a free kick.
The Wildcats would score twice to take a 3-1 lead, including the go-ahead late in the first half on a penalty kick. A shot inside the box hit a Cardinal's arm, which resulted in the PK. Bauer took the honors and gave the visitors the lead. Their third goal came from leading scorer, Dylan Owens, in the 60
th minute.
UIW (2-13-1, 1-9-1) cut the deficit to one as
Sam Batley scored, assisted by
Carly Hankins. Earlier, Wildcat keeper Erin Smith fouled a Cardinal in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Batley took the PK and although her shot hit the crossbar, the ball bounced around in the box before Hankins found Batley for the tally.
Seven minutes later, in the 77
th minute, ACU was awarded a back-breaking goal, as Christina Arteaga took a shot that bounced off
Katrina Buck's gloves and into the net.
LEADERS
All four of the Cardinals' shots hit the target, as Batley led the hosts with two shots. Buck took the loss in goal as she made five saves.
Bauer led all players with three points on the night. Owens took match highs of six shots and four shots on goal. Smith earned the win in goal as she stopped two shots.
