Moore, Nevarez, Lead Cardinals to 2-1 Overtime Win Over Central Arkansas

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS -- A goal in the 86th minute by O'Neal Moore sent the game into overtime and Daniel Nevarez then gave the University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer a team a 2-1 win over Central Arkansas with a goal in the 94th minute Saturday night at Benson Stadium.

The Cardinals (2-4-1) struggled on the offensive side all night, including a missed PK, but pulled through when it counted. Both teams battled for over 90 minutes but it looked like Central Arkansas would come out on top.

The Bears (2-3-1) got on the board very early in the game when their leading scorer, Niklas Brodacki, made a run of over 40 yards and beat the UIW goalie to the far post for his 6th goal of the season. From then on, it was a battle, but one that looked frustrating for the Cardinals. They managed 16 shots on the night, but nothing would go in.  Ben Conway (Wigan, Eng/Hawkley Hall) had a chance to tie the game in the 25th minute when he took a penalty kick, but UCA goalie, Marc Olsen, came up with a brilliant diving save to keep the score in the Bears' favor.

UIW goalie Jorge Guzman (Duncanville/Duncanville HS also was a big part of the big win for the Cardinals. In the second half, with the score 1-0 in favor of the visiting team, Guzman came up with two terrific saves to stop what looked to be clear goals for the Bears.

Then in the 86th minute, Jelani Mark (Houston/Westifled HS) took a shot after a rebound from a corner kick; the shot was deflected by some defenders and Moore (Houston/Alief Taylor) grabbed the rebound and found the back of the net to give the Cardinals what they had been looking for all night: their first goal of the game and a chance to win the game in overtime. Then just four minutes into the first overtime, defending Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, Nevarez (Las Cruces, NM/Winfrey Academy), received a beautiful through ball in the box from Conway, and hit the far post but then grabbed his own rebound and scored the golden goal for the victory in the 94th minute. It was Nevarez' second goal of the season—to go with his two assists—and it was Conway's first assists of the season.

Mark gets credited for an assists on the Cardinals' first goal—his first of the season—and the Bears' Brodacki scored his goal unassisted.

Bears' goalie, Olsen, finished the night with four saves. Also to be noted, UIW's Miguel Ojeda had a great block in the first half, in what would have been a clear goal for Brodacki in the 20th minute. Ojeda had to leave the game after suffering an injury on that same play.

Despite being down most of the game, the Cardinals outshot the Bears 16-8, and players for both teams received a yellow card; one for each team.
These two teams just faced each other last Sunday in Conway, Arkansas and they finished in a 1-1 tie after two overtimes.

The Cardinals will host an alumni game next Sunday, and the following Sunday they will host Air Force in the first game of WAC play at 1:00 p.m.
