Hat Trick Sinks Cardinals at #12 SMU 3-0

DALLAS—A hat trick from SMU's Brenden Lee gave the Mustangs a 3-0 win over the University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team, Monday at Westcott Field.
 
The Cardinals (0-2) fought hard against the #13 ranked team in the nation. They played to a 0-0 draw in the first 45 minutes of the game, but were unable to contain the powerful offense of the Mustangs in the second half.
 
The first half was all about defense as both teams struggled to create any chances at goal. UIW didn't take a shot, while SMU took three shots, only one being on target.
 
In the second half, it all changed. Both teams were able to figure out ways to get to goal, with SMU finding more success. Lee untied the game with his first goal of the season in the 70th minute and that seemed to open the flood gates for the Mustangs. Despite the Cardinals taking six shots in the half, Michael Nelson made sure to keep his goal untouched. He had four saves to collect his first clean sheet of the young season. Lee took care of the rest; he scored again the 78th minute and then completed his first hat trick of the season just a minute later, in the 79th minute.
 
At the end of the game, the Mustangs finished with 14 total shots and six on goal, while the Cardinals had 6 and four on goal. The Cardinals' Carlos Guerrero received a red card in the 90th minute right before the game ended.
 
The Cardinals will look for their first win of the season this weekend, as they travel to Buffalo to face Canisius on Friday at 3:00 p.m. and then Buffalo on Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
