SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team is scheduled to play two games this weekend, one on Friday at home against the University of Houston at 5:00 p.m. and one away on Sunday against Baylor also at 5:00 p.m.
Â
The Cardinals are 0-1 so far this season. They fought hard in their season opener game against North Texas last Friday but came up short, losing 4-0. The game was played on a local high school field in Denton due to heavy rain and a soaking UNT field.
Â
This is not the first matchup for UIW and these two teams. Â It will be the second season in which UIW will play Houston, and the third season that they will play Baylor. Â Last year the Cardinals lost 4-0 against Houston. Â In the games against Baylor, UIW came up short 7-1 in 2015 and 5-0 in 2014.
Â
The Cardinals return their three leading goal-scorers from 2015 in Abigail Koenigs (San Antonio/Brandeis HS), Emani Stewart (Victorville, CA/Hesperia HS), and Sabrina Martineau (McKinney/McKinney North HS). The three combined to score 11 of the team's 13 total goals.
Â
Baylor (1-1) has just began to take the field in this new season. Â Their season opener win against Detroit Mercy was a 2-0 shutout. Â They took a total of 19 shots and made 11 on goal. Â Their opponents took only three shots, none of which were on goal. Â The Bears are in the Big 12 Conference and placed second in their 2015 season with a record of 4-1-2.
Â
Houston (1-0) also got off to a strong start in this 2016 season by winning their season opener against Texas Southern (3-0). Â The Cougars took a total of 12 shots in the game which was 10 more shots than opponents Texas Southern took. Â
