SAN ANTONIO, TX—The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team finished off their preseason with another 2-1 win Sunday night against UTRGV at Benson Stadium.
The Cardinals looked strong, both, offensively and defensively throughout the game. They outscored the Vaqueros 11-6 and got on the board earlier and more often. The scoring began in the 5
th minute when
Ben Conway (Wigan, Eng/Hawkley Hall HS) put away his first preseason goal with a left-footed finish after dribbling right past the defender. After that, the Vaqueros only got two shots in the first half and none were on goal.
UIW created many more scoring opportunities including a terrific shot from
Miguel Ojeda (Mesquite/Lone Star HS) in the 24
th minute that was saved by the goalie Leo Castillo. The Cardinals would then extend the score to 2-0 off the foot of
O'Neal Moore (Houston/Alief Taylor HS) in the 30
th minute when he received a pass from
Robert Pratt (Tonbridge, Eng/Haberdasher Askes Knights Academy) and put it away in the far post with his left foot.
The score remained 2-0 until the 59
th minute when the Vaqueros took advantage of a foul in the box. Jaakko Hietikko scored from the penalty spot to cut the lead to 2-1 but that would be it.
The Cardinals played very tough defense throughout the game and the only shot on goal they allowed all 90 minutes was the penalty shot.
The regular season will begin next Friday for the Cardinals when they host Oral Roberts at 7:30 p.m. at Benson Stadium.
