Box Score

DENTON, TEXAS - The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team fell to the University of North Texas 4-0 in the first regular season game on Friday night at the Denton High School soccer field.

The players encountered a few hiccups throughout the game. Rain and a change of playing fields caused for some chaos throughout the night. The game was moved to Denton High School so the game could be play on turf due to heavy rain.

The Mean Green (1-0) opened the score in the third minute and never looked back. They took 21 shots in the game and found the back of the net four times.Rachel Holden scored the first goal, then Marchelle Davis scored twice, including her first from the penalty spot, and Tori Phillips made it 4-0 in the 76th minute when she took a hard shot from 30 yards away to beat the goalie.

For the Cardinals (0-1), Sabrina Martineau (McKinney/McKinney North HS), sophomore and midfielder, led the team in shots; she took two and all together the Cardinals took six. All six shots from the visiting team were on goal, but North Texas goalkeeper, Brooke Bradley, saved all six shots, preserving her first shutout of the season.

Despite the loss, the Cardinals accomplished some sound plays throughout the game which should lead to a promising season. The women will take on the University of Houston next Friday, August 26, at Benson Stadium at 5:00 PM.
