Cardinals Take Exhibition Game 2-1

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS—The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team took the field for the first time in 2016 Friday night for an exhibition game against San Jacinto College and came out on top 2-1 at Benson Stadium.

The game started with much of the possession belonging to San Jacinto and it paid off as they took the lead early in the game with a goal in the 3rd minute by Heiko Leinweber. The Cardinals then created many scoring opportunities but didn't capitalize until the 33rd minute when Robert Pratt (Tonbridge, Eng/Haberdasher Askes Knights Academy) tied it up after taking a ball that was deflected by a defender and finding the back of the net.

The Cardinals stepped up in the second half and kept possession for most of the 45 minutes. They had eight shots but a few good stops from Paul Tyson kept the score tied at 1-1. Then in the 72nd minute, a corner kick for the Cardinals turned into the game winning goal. Pratt crossed the ball into the box and Isaac Currie (Notthingham, Eng/Carlton Le Willows HS) headed the ball and beat the goalie for the decisive 2-1.

The Cardinals will play one more exhibition game before starting the regular season. They host UTRGV this Sunday at 6:00 p.m.  and start the regular season next Friday at home against Oral Roberts at 7:30 p.m.
