CONWAY, ARKANSAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team was shutout on Friday night at Bear Stadium by Southland Conference rival University of Central Arkansas, 9-0.
The Cardinals (12-33, 5-17) put runners on second and third with one out in both the second and third innings and each time Cody Davenport was able to wiggle out of the jam for the Bears (19-23, 10-12). That proved to be the closest UIW came to scoring all night.
The home Bears scored in five different innings. Each of the top four batters in their lineup had at least two hits. Chris Townsend went 3-for-4 with three runs, an RBI and a stolen base to lead UCA on offense. Overall, all nine players in the lineup reached base safely via walk or hit in the game. Davenport tossed 8.0 shutout innings to improve to 4-2 on the year. He scattered seven hits and two walks while striking out three. Connor McClain pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to close it out.
The Cardinals used five different freshmen pitchers in the game.
Bernie Martinez (Laredo/United HS) had the most success going 2.0 innings while allowing two hits and one run with three strikeouts.
Denson Hull (San Antonio/Churchill HS) started the game and took the loss on the mound.
The two teams are back in action on Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
