SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Strong pitching plus timely hitting and defense gave the visiting University of the Incarnate Word a 5-2 victory at UTSA on Tuesday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.
The Cardinals (9-24) were first on the scoreboard in the second inning, but the Roadrunners (12-20) quickly tied the game in the bottom of the third and then took a 2-1 lead on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Straub in the sixth inning.
UIW responded by scoring in each of the final three frames.
Christian Divelbiss (Yuba City, CA/Yuba City HS) led off the seventh with a walk and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. He scored on a throwing error by the Roadrunners to tie the game. The Cardinals took advantage of another error in the eighth inning that allowed
Cory Duran (Lewisville/Lewisville HS) a chance to hit a go-ahead, two-out single.
The Roadrunners tried to respond in the eighth inning. A leadoff single followed by a sacrifice bunt put the tying run in scoring position. A bad throw by shortstop
Bryce Shepherd (Coldspring/Coldspring-Oakhurst HS) put runners on the corners with one out, but he made up for on the very next play when he took a grounder and converted it into a 6-3 double play to end the inning.
The Cardinals plated a pair of insurance runs in the ninth inning. After one out, Shepherd,
Ryan Gonzalez (Corpus Christi/Carroll HS) and
Eddy Gonzalez (Laredo/United HS) hit three straight singles to score one run and then
Austin Hoffman's (Goodyear, AZ/Millenium HS) ground out brought in the final run.
UTSA put two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth, but
Lance Moszkowicz (Spring/Klein Collins HS) was able to get the final three outs for his fourth save of the season.
Tyler Lesley (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) picked up the win with 2.0 shutout innings of relief to improve to 2-4.
Cody Allen (Bulverde/Smithson Valley HS) pitched well in a starting role, but took a no-decision. He went 5.2 innings allowing six hits, two runs and one walk while striking out one.

Eddy Gonzalez and Hoffman each had a pair of hits.
Karan Patel was tagged with the loss for the Roadrunners. He allowed five hits, one earned run and four walks in 7.0 innings. He added five strikeouts. Patrick Herbelin pitched the final 2.0 innings. Trent Bowles and Ryan Stacy each had two hits for the home team.
The Cardinals are back in action tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Sullivan Field.
