SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's and men's tennis team were pounced on by Abilene Christian University on Saturday. The women were swept by ACU, 7-0 while the men lost, 5-2.
The UIW women (2-17, 0-9) dropped the first and second position doubles matches for the early point to ACU (15-5, 5-1).
Rachel Sadiq (Frisco/Frisco HS) was retired 6-1 and 6-2 by Erin Walker at #1 singles and Lucile Pothier defeated
Taryn Strahl (San Antonio/Churchill HS) in the third position.
Matea Zemunik (Jesenice, Croatia/Marko Marlic) sent her #2 singles match to three sets, but lost to Kaysie Hermsdorf 6-2, 5-7, 7-5.
The UIW men (7-12, 0-3) fared better during the day against the Wildcats, but still could not get the team victory. Abilene Christian (17-6, 2-0) started strong with the doubles point with two wins in the second and third positions.
Josip Smoljan (Citluk, Bosnia and Herzegovina/Srednja Skola) and
Francisco Bendana (College Station/New Braunfels HS) remained undefeated for the day as their #1 doubles match was left unfinished. Smoljan took the #1 singles match against Josh Sheehy 7-6, 6-7, 6-0 and Bendana also won a three set match 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
The Lady Cardinals travel to University of Central Arkansas for a Sunday match at 9 a.m. They will also play Arkansas-Pine Bluff that same day at 1 p.m. The men's team travels Texas A&M-Corpus Christi next Saturday at 4 p.m.
