SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word tennis teams were kept out of the win column on Friday by UTSA and Lamar University, respectively. The UIW men lost to UTSA, 4-1 on the road while the UIW women lost to Lamar, 6-1 in the home Southland Conference match.
The UIW men fell to 7-9 on the season with their loss at the UTSA Tennis Center. The only player to earn a point for the Cardinals was freshman
Francisco Bendana (College Station/New Braunfels HS). He won his #3 singles match against Christian Carrillo in straight sets 6-4, 7-5. The Cardinals travel to the University of Texas on Saturday for a match at 5 p.m.
The UIW women remained winless in Southland Conference play with their loss to Lamar. The Cardinals started the match on a good note. They won the doubles point after
Taryn Strahl (San Antonio/Churchill HS) and
Sarah Savedra (El Paso/El Paso HS) won at #2 doubles, 6-4 and
Clarisa Salinas (Plano/Lovejoy HS) and
Antea Dedic (Split, Croatia/Opca Gimnazija) teamed at #3 doubles to win, 6-2.
Unfortunately, the Cardinals were never able to get anything going against Lamar in singles play.
Rachel Sadiq (Frisco/Frisco HS) won the first set at #1 singles over Katya Lapayeva, 7-5, but then Lapayeva came back to win the second set, 7-5 and she took the third super set, 10-1. The women are back in action on Saturday at 10 a.m. against Sam Houston State at home.
