Cowboys Top Cardinals by One Run

STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA – The #25 Oklahoma State Cowboys outlasted the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team, 3-2 in a game that was decided by a run in the seventh inning on Wednesday night at Reynolds Stadium.

The Cardinals (3-6) lost to the Cowboys (4-5) 7-1 last night, but came out ready to play Wednesday. John Shull (San Antonio/Churchill HS) got the start for UIW and went 5.0 innings, allowing two earned runs and four hits while striking out five. He left the game with the score tied 2-2, giving him a no decision for the game.

The Cowboys scored right away in the first inning when leadoff hitter Corey Hassel was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and came in to score on an RBI single by Donnie Walton.

The Cardinals would use small ball in the third inning to tie the game up 1-1. Bryce Shepherd (Coldspring/Coldspring Oakhurst HS) led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on a ground out and later came in to score on a single by Brance Kahle (Colleyville/Grapevine Faith HS).

The tie would not last long.  Walton drove in Hassel with a ground out in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-1 lead.  UIW tied it again in the sixth inning. This time it all started with a two-out walk to Hunter Kunc (Mason/Mason HS), who later stole second and then came in to score on an RBI single by Eddy Gonzalez (Laredo/United HS).

Lance Moszkowicz (Spring/Klein Collins HS), who has been nearly untouchable this season, came into the game in the sixth with the score tied 2-2. In the seventh inning, he gave up a single and a double that would give the Cowboys the 3-2 lead, which was enough for the two-game sweep. Moszkowicz got tabbed with the loss, but still managed to go 3.0 innings in relief, allowing one run and two hits while striking out two.

The pitching duties for the Cowboys were split up between four pitchers, with Tyler Buffet grabbing the win with 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and one walk with three strike outs.

Kahle was the only Cardinal with multiple hits. He drove in a run and collected two more hits to raise his batting average to .333 on the year. Shepherd finished the afternoon 1-for-3 with a run scored, while Kunc went 0-for-1, with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored. Cory Duran (Lewisville/Lewisville HS) reached base three times, via a hit and two walks and also stole a base. The visiting Cardinals out-hit the home team 7-6, but were held to two runs in the afternoon.

The Cardinals are back on the road for a three game series at Texas State starting Friday at 6:00 p.m.
