THIBODAUX, LOUISIANA – The University of the Incarnate Word men's tennis team was edged out by the Nicholls Colonels in Southland Conference play on Tuesday, 4-3.
In doubles,
Francisco Bendana (College Station/New Braunfels HS) and
Josip Smoljan (Citluk, Bosnia and Herzegovina/Srednja Skola) put up a fight for the point with a 6-3 win at #2, but the Cardinals dropped the other two matches.
Nicholls (2-9, 1-0) was able to stay even in the singles matches to earn the victory. Smoljan led UIW in the #1 position with a three-set win 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
Joey Vatanadilok (San Antonio/Bridgeway Academy) also earned a point for the Cardinals with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win.
Tucker Brown (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) got the third point in two sets.
Sebastian Mortier (Hanau, Germany/Karl-Rehbein-Schule) and
Ryan Hoverson (Grand Forks, ND/ Red River HS) were both retired in straight-sets. The deciding point of the match ended up being Max Sinn's come-from-behind victory over Bendana in three sets.
The Cardinals will be facing the New Orleans Privateers on Wednesday. The road match will begin at 2 p.m.
