VICKSBURG, MISSISSIPPI – Despite dealing with weather issues for most of the weekend, the University of the Incarnate Word men's tennis team was able to play a pair of matches at Alcorn State on Sunday and came away with a pair of 4-0 wins.
In the first match of the day, the Cardinals (7-6) earned the first point behind the play of their doubles teams.
Francisco Bendana and
Josip Smoljan won 6-2 at #2 while
Tucker Brown and
Ryan Hoverson whitewashed their opponents at #3, 6-0.
In singles action, it was a race to see who could win their match first for the Cardinals. Bendana,
Sebastian Mortier and Hoverson each dispatched their opponents in straight sets to clinch the match. Smoljan,
Joey Vatanadilok and Brown were all on their way to victories as well, but did not get to finish.
The second match of the day was similar to the first, but this time the teams skipped the doubles matches and opened with the singles. Bendana moved up from #3 to #1 for UIW and responded with a 6-3, 6-4 win. Smoljan and Mortier followed with straight set wins at #2 and #3 and
Caleb Dyer got in on the fun at #6 with a 6-0, 6-1 win.
The Cardinals are back in action tomorrow at Nicholls for a 2 p.m. start.
