Lamar Snaps UIW Road Win Streak

BEAUMONT, TEXAS – Lamar University snapped the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team three-game road winning streak on Saturday at the Montagne Center, 59-49 in Southland Conference action.

The third quarter proved to be difference in the game.  Lamar (10-13, 6-6) outscored UIW (6-15, 3-7), 19-7 in the period, including a 12-4 run over the final 3:34 of the period.  Lamar pushed the lead to 14 points early in the fourth quarter before Incarnate Word went on a 7-0 run, but they could get no closer than seven points the rest of the way.

The game looked like it might be a Lamar blower through the first seven minutes.  LU led 13-4 and UIW could not get anything going on the offensive end.  They finally got things going and closed the quarter on a 10-1 run and it was extended to a 14-1 run when Haley Frias (Georgetown/Georgetown HS) drained a three-pointer with 6:45 left in the second quarter.  Lamar finally broke the run with a Chastadie Barrs layup with 5:01 to play in the half.  UIW was able to hold the lead going into halftime at 25-24.

Incarnate Word shot 32.7 percent from the field and just 28.0 percent in the second half.  They made 3-of-17 from three-point range and were 14-of-22 at the foul line.  Melina Merritt (Round Rock/Cedar Ridge HS) and Jordan Franks (Norman, OK/Norman HS) each had 10 points to lead the team in scoring.  Yvonne Maosa (Arlington/Mansfield HS) just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.  The Cardinals had seven more rebounds than Lamar, but committed 19 turnovers that were converted into 29 points.

Lamar shot 35.8 percent from the field, made 5-of-11 from three-point range and were 16-of-24 at the foul line.  LU only played six players in the entire game.  Addesha Collins led the team with 22 points and six rebounds while going 6-of-8 from the field and 9-of-9 from the charity stripe.  Barrs added 19 points and eight boards.  Kiara Desamours and Laka Blache each had nine rebounds to lead the team.

UIW is back in action on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Stephen F. Austin.
