SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's and women's tennis teams each swept visiting Prairie View A&M University, 7-0.
The UIW men improved to 4-5 overall and 4-2 at home. The Cardinals picked up the doubles point against the short-handed Panthers.
Josip Smoljan (Citluk, Bosnia and Herzegovina/Srednja Skola) and
Francisco Bendana (College Station/New Braunfels HS) took Anirudh Yady and Ulrick Boyogueno, 6-4 and PVAMU did not have a #3 doubles team.
Incarnate Word held nothing back in the singles as they collected all six points. Smoljan won his #1 match against Christian Waldron 6-2, 6-3. Bendana also took a two set win 6-1, 6-4.
Joey Vatanadilok (San Antonio/Bridgeway Academy) and
Tucker Brown (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) each won their matches in straight sets.
The Cardinals travel to Arlington to play UT- Arlington on Friday at 2 p.m. and then they will play Oral Roberts on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Incarnate Word women improved to 2-6 on the season with their win. The #1 doubles team of
Rachel Sadiq (Frisco/Frisco HS) and
Victoria Kareh (The Woodlands/The John Cooper School) and the #3 team of
Matea Zemunik (Jesenice, Croatia/Marko Marulic) and
Antea Dedic (Split, Croatia/Opca Gimnazija) each picked up easy victories to deliver the doubles point to the Cardinals.
In the singles matches, the Cardinals picked up five straight set victories, including a 6-0, 6-0 win by
Taryn Strahl (San Antonio/Churchill HS) at #4 singles. Sadiq took the #1 singles victory against Neharika Rama in three sets 6-1, 1-6, 6-2.
The women's team is off until next Sunday when they host Air Force Academy at 9 a.m.
