MISSOULA, Mont. – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team couldn't overcome a poor shooting night in the finale of the Lady Griz Classic as Utah State ran away with a 79-46 victory at Dahlberg Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals (0-4) shot just 24.6 percent for the floor on Friday, while the Aggies (4-1) shot 53.7 percent and outrebounded UIW, 44-33.
After a slow start, the Cardinals warmed up in the second quarter, shooting 46.7 percent from the field, but the Aggies answered with a blazing 73.3 percent in the frame to take a commanding 43-24 advantage at the break.
Haley Frias hit a pair of three-pointers to open the second half, but UIW went the next 7:33 of the third quarter without a made basket and Utah State never relented, steadily growing its lead for the remainder of the contest.
LEADERS
Frias finished with team-highs in both points (14) and rebounds (six).
Cassandra Ramirez pulled down six boards, while
Imani Robinson scored 11 points and dished out three assists to lead the Cardinals.
Rachel Brewster (18 points), Shannon Dufficy (nine rebounds) and Eliza West (four assists) spearheaded the Aggies' attack.
HONORS
At the conclusion of the Lady Griz Classic,
Celia Garcia Paunero was named to the all-tournament team. Garcia Punero averaged 11 points, 11.5 boards, 2.0 steals and 1.5 assists over the two-game event.
UP NEXT
The Cardinals return to San Antonio for the team's home-opener against Eastern Michigan at the McDermott Convocation Center on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
