UIW Finishes Season With a Five Set Victory Over Lamar

BEAUMONT, TX – Huge performances from Autumn Lockley and Bryaunea Hall led the University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team to a five set victory over Lamar on Saturday afternoon in the final match of the 2016 campaign.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Both teams started well offensively in the opening set, which featured 10 ties and six lead changes. After getting a 21-18 advantage late, Lamar was able to score five out of the last seven points to win the set 25-21. For UIW, Lockley led the team with five kills in the first period.
 
The second frame was a thriller that took extra points to settle. The period went back and forth late and the turning point came on two attacking errors from UIW that gave Lamar the 37-35 victory to take a 2-0-match lead. The Cardinals had 23 kills in the set, but they could not overcome 16 errors. Lockley once again led the UIW attack with nine kills.
 
After going down 2-0, the Cardinals responded with a great offensive performance and ended up winning the third frame 25-20. The team had 15 kills and only two errors to overpower Lamar. Hall had five kills and Emily Waller and Lockley each had three.
 
In a must win situation, UIW once again responded and edged out Lamar 25-23 in the fourth. The Cardinals scored two out of the last three points to win the set and force a fifth set.
 
After falling behind early in the final frame, the Cardinals battled back to score the final three points highlighted by two kills from Waller to win the set 15-11 and the match 3-2.
 
LEADERS
 
Lockley finished her monster performance with 21 kills and 20 digs while Hall added 18 kills and 22 total points. Waller also played very well with 14 kills and a .429 attacking percentage. Sierra Moses led the Cardinals with 32 assists while Madison Williams added 28. Claudia Hernandez and Shaina Garza both had great performances in their final match as a Cardinal. Garza finished with seven kills and 18 digs and Hernandez had 20 digs.
 
Chelsea Grant led Lamar with 18 kills and Carlyn Stella added 12 with 16 digs. Haley Morton led the team with 27 assists and 16 digs as well.
