HOUSTON – The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team couldn't overcome a pair of goals from Houston Baptist and lost a Western Athletic Conference game 2-0 Sunday night at Sorrels Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals' offense (4-9-3, 2-5-2 WAC) outshot the home team 22-15, but were shutout for the third straight time. They managed to take 17 shots in the first half, compared to the Huskies' three shots the first 45 minutes. But HBU (5-10-1, 3-6 WAC) made them count. In just the three shots, one of them, a shot from Malik Key, found the back of the net in the 15
th minute to give the Huskies an early 1-0 lead. Then in the second half, Marc Anthone took a low shot from the left side and scored to make it 2-0 in the 54
th minute.
LEADERS
Ben Conway added to his already third-highest shot total in the WAC. He led the Cardinals with nine shots on the night, and two of them were on goal.
Roberto Diaz Fernandez and
Fernando Laverde both took three shots each.
For the Huskies, Key scored his fifth goal of the season and took two shots, while Anthone his second and took three shots. Darrell Johnson got credited with two assists on the night, and Kenneth Shonaike and Dequan Thomas both assisted a goal as well.
GOALKEEPER DECISION
UIW's
Jorge Guzman gave up two goals but also saved six shots on goal in 90 minutes.
The Huskies' Chance Pope turned in his second clean sheet of the season. He had an impressive nine saves to keep the Cardinals off the board.
UP NEXT
The Cardinals have one game remaining in the season. They close out the year with senior night at Benson Stadium when they host Utah Valley on Saturday at 8 p.m.
