CONWAY, ARKANSAS – Two late goals propelled the University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team to a 2-1 come-from-behind win on the road against Central Arkansas on Sunday.
The Bears (1-3) got on the board first in the 10
th minute when Pepe San Roman recovered a deflection and passed it to Wes Carson who was able to finish from five yards away for the goal.
The game remained very evenly matched with both teams creating many opportunities for goal. The Cardinals (2-1) attempted an impressive 21 shots before scoring any goals. It wasn't until the 81
st minute when
Noah Keats (Exeter, Eng/The King's School) found
Alex Hoyl (Dallas/Highland Park HS) off a corner kick for a header from seven yards away to tie the score. Just two minutes later, Keats gave the Cardinals the lead by finding the net with an assist from
Jonathan Camarena (El Paso/Del Valle HS).
"The guys showed me a lot today being down 1-0 to battle hard and score twice in the final nine minutes," said UIW head coach
Vince Martinez. "Sunday afternoon games are very difficult because of the heat as well as playing in different States less than 40 hours apart is not easy. This was a great team effort today and I'm very proud of everyone."
UIW outshot the Bears 23-18, and summed 13 shots on goal compared to 11. Both goalkeepers stayed busy throughout the game. The Cardinals'
Kieran O'Boyle (Blackpool, Eng./St. Mary's Catholic College) and UCA's Harrison Veith both finished the game with 11 saves each.
Keats has now scored two goals in the season and his assist Sunday also gives him two in the year. Hoyl's goal was his first of the season and of his career as a Cardinal. Camarena also added another assist, tying him for the team lead with Keats with two each.
The Cardinals will travel to Phoenix, Arizona to play a couple of matches next weekend. They start against Sacramento State, Friday at 7:00 p.m., and finish their road trip Sunday against the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay at 2:00 p.m.
