CONWAY, ARKANSAS – The University of Incarnate Word volleyball team will travel this weekend to take on Central Arkansas to open their Southland Conference schedule. The match will take place in the Prince Center on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
This is the 10
th straight match on the road to start the season for the Cardinals (2-7). Last year, UIW played the first 13 matches of the season away from the McDermott Convocation Center and started with a record of 4-9.
On the season so far, the Cardinals are averaging 12.0 kills per set while their opponents average 11.8 per set, but the main difference between UIW and their opponents is in attack errors committed. The team has already committed 209 errors compared to their opponents with 147, and it has led to a .152 attacking percentage for the Cardinals.
Shaina Garza (San Antonio/Warren HS) leads UIW with 2.28 kills per set while
Sarea Alexander (San Antonio/MacArthur HS) has a .276 attack percentage.
Taylor McClelland (Cypress/Cypress Ranch HS) has seen the most time at setter and has 5.03 assists per set.
Claudia Hernandez (San Antonio/Antonian HS) leads the defense with 3.59 digs per set.
The Sugar Bears have started the season with a 5-9 record and they currently have a three match winning streak with wins over Louisiana Tech, Alabama State and Abilene Christian. Outside hitter Heather Schnars is the top player on the team averaging 3.91 kills and 2.36 digs per set while posting a .257 attack percentage. Megan Nash, Savanah Allen and Samantha Anderson provide a strong blocking wall for the defense. The Cardinals are 1-2 all-time against the Sugar Bears, but have lost both matches since joining the Southland Conference.
