NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA – The University of Incarnate Word volleyball team began the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Classic with a pair of losses to Tulane and TCU. They lost 20-25, 25-17, 25-15, 25-18 to the Green Wave and 25-16, 25-20, 25-20 to the Horned Frogs.
The first match of the day began with a set win for the Cardinals (2-6) against the Tulane Green Wave.
Autumn Lockley (Leander/Leander HS) and Hope Kelly (Stafford, VA/Colonial Forge HS) helped the team get off to a fast start in the set as they combined for five kills in the first six points of the set. The Cardinals took control of the set after aces by
Angelique Vidaurri (San Antonio/Southwest HS) and
Sarea Alexander (San Antonio/MacArthur HS) to give UIW a 22-19 advantage in the set. Lockley and Vidaurri got the final two kills for the Cardinals to close out the set 25-20 for UIW.
Unfortunately, the Cardinals were not able to carry the momentum into the rest of the match as the Green Wave went on to win the next three sets to win the match.
The Cardinals had 40 kills in the match and a .125 attack. Hall led the team with 10 kills while Alexander had seven kills and a .538 attack.
Kaitlyn Brooks (Sugar Land/Fort Bend Austin HS) dished out 24 assists while
Claudia Hernandez (San Antonio/Antonian HS) had 15 digs.
The Green Wave finished with 56 kills and a .279 attack. Sarah Ray led the team with 15 kills while Tea Juric posted a double-double with 14 kills and 28 digs. Elizabeth Hurring led all players with 45 assists.
In the second match of the day, the Cardinals took on the TCU Horned Frogs. The Cardinals struggles on the attack continued as they had a lot of attack errors and service errors. The Horned Frogs won the match in three sets although the Cardinals did not go down quietly.
In the first set, Vidaurri led the team with five kills while Lockley and
Shaina Garza (San Antonio/Warren HS) had four and three kills, respectively. The second set was very close up until the end as TCU ended the set with two straight points to win the set 25-20.
The third set ended just like the second with a TCU 25-20 set victory. The set was tied 20-20 after a kill by Lockley, but the Horned Frogs ended the set with a five point run to win the set and the match.
Shaina Garza and
Angelique Vidaurri led the Cardinals with nine kills apiece. Overall, the team had 36 kills and a .116 attack. Lockley just missed a double-double with eight kills and nine digs.
Taylor McClelland (Cypress/Cypress Ranch HS) and Brooks both had double digit assists 14 and 13.
The Cardinals continue the tournament on Saturday as they face North Carolina State in the final match of the tournament. The action starts at 4:30 p.m. as UIW will go for their first victory in the tournament.
