SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team opens the 2015 season on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. against Oral Roberts University at Benson Stadium.
The Cardinals were 7-11-1 last season when they finished third in the Western Athletic Conference. Two of those losses came against Oral Roberts. The Golden Eagles won 2-1 in San Antonio and 3-2 in Tulsa, OK. UIW will try to turn things around this year as they have a return match with ORU on September 4.
The Cardinals return four of their top five goal scorers from last year.
Ben Conway (Wigan, Eng./Hawkley Hall) and
Dylan Kelly (Tucson, AZ/Salpointe Catholic HS) tied for the team lead with six goals apiece. Noah Kelly (Exeter, Eng./The King's School) added five goals in just nine games due to an injury.
The UIW back line is led by second team all-conference selections
Jonathan Camarena (El Paso/Del Valle HS) and
Joe Brown (Nottingham, Eng./The Becket School).
Kieran O'Boyle (Blackpool, Eng./St. Mary's Catholic) returns for his second year between the pipes after posting a 1.47 goals against average with four shutouts in 2014.
The Golden Eagles are a member of The Summit League and they were 8-8-2 last year and tied for first in the conference. Matthew Rogers is the top scorer returning from last year. He scored four goals and assisted on six others. Ben LaCourse was the return's as the team's starting goalkeeper. He posted five shutouts and had a 1.64 goals against average last year.
