SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team used a
Dylan Kelly (Tucson, AZ/Salpointe Catholic HS) header in the 89
th minute to even the score 1-1 in an exhibition game against St. Edward's Thursday night at Benson Stadium.
The match remained scoreless in the first half, but the Hilltoppers would quickly change that in the second half. Mobley Grant headed in a cross from Pablo Covarrubias in the 59
th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
It was an evenly matched game, but the Cardinals could not find a way to break the Hilltoppers defense most of the game.
Noah Keats (Exeter, Eng./The King's School) then found an opening on the left lane and found Kelly with a long cross into the box. Kelly placed his header perfectly from the right side into the left side of the goal to salvage a last minute tie in their second exhibition game of the year.
Because it was an exhibition game, the score remained tied without any extra time, giving the Cardinals a 0-1-1 record in preseason.
UIW attempted nine shots, while the HIlltoppers finished with seven. Kevin Leib kept St. Edwards from giving up a few more goals with five saves in the game. Despite fewer shots, the Hilltoppers created a number of excellent chances. They nearly scored in the first minute when Karl DeZoeten blasted a shot from inside the box that required a great save by UIW freshman goalkeeper
Chase Therrien (Trophy Club/Byron Nelson HS).
The Cardinals travel to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley for their last exhibition game of the year Sunday at 6:00 p.m. Their first regular season game will take place next Saturday when they host Oral Roberts at 7:30 p.m.
