CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team closed out the 2015 season with a whimper on Saturday as they were shut out in both ends of a doubleheader by Southland Conference rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christ, 2-0 and 4-0 at Chapman Field.
The first game was a pitcher's duel between
Brooke DuBois (Pearland/Pearland HS) of the Cardinals (12-39, 4-23) and Stephanie Flores of the Islanders (20-26-1, 15-11). UIW had runners in scoring position in the first, fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but could not push across a run. The Islanders threatened to score in the first two innings, but then DuBois shut them down.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Mickayla Cochran and Brittney Morse led off with back-to-back singles. A sacrifice bunt was followed by Liz Carter's two-run single that proved to be the only runs in the game. Flores allowed seven hits, two walks and no runs while striking out six to earn the win. DuBois allowed eight hits, two runs and no walks while striking out two.
In the second game, the Islanders scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning and then put the game away with three runs in the fourth. Brittney Morse cracked a solo home run to open the fourth. Carter tossed a complete game shutout and went 1-for-1 with a run and an RBI at the plate. She limited the Cardinals to just four hits and a walk while striking out three.
