DuBois Leads Cardinals to a Sweep

PRAIRIE VIEW, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team swept a doubleheader on the road at Prairie View A&M on Tuesday, 8-3 and 19-10 at the PVAMU Softball Field.

The two victories give the Cardinals (8-29) a season high four-game winning streak as they head into a Southland Conference home series this weekend against Nicholls State University.

In the first game, it was the Brooke DuBois (Pearland/Pearland HS) Show.  DuBois tossed a complete game in the circle to improve to 3-8 on the season.  She allowed eight hits, three runs and three walks while striking out five.  At the plate, she went 2-for-3 with two runs, a double, a three-run homer and six runs batted in.  Her sixth inning home run gave the Cardinals the breathing room they needed.

UIW had 10 hits in the game and did not commit and error in the field.  Taylor Johnson (Schertz/Clemens HS) went 3-for-5 with three runs and a stolen base from her lead-off spot.  Monique Miller (Hewitt/Midway HS) scored twice in the game while Shelbi Swenson (Elgin/Elgin HS) had two hits and an RBI.

Monica Cartwright took the loss for the Panthers (5-19).  She allowed 10 hits, three earned runs and three walks in 7.0 innings of work.  Amanda Ford had two hits, a double and scored a run while Jalla Johnson drove in two runs.

In the second game, the Cardinals scored their most runs in a game since a 20-0 victory over Concordia-Texas on February 17, 1998.  The game was close for a long time.  The Panthers led 4-1 after one inning and then the Cardinals scored eight times in the second inning, but PVAMU scored four more times over the next two innings to make it 9-8 UIW after three innings.

The Cardinals tacked on a run in the fourth inning before putting the game away late.  They scored three times in the sixth inning and six times in the seventh inning.  UIW took advantage of eight errors by the Panthers and scored 12 unearned runs.

UIW pounded out 15 hits in the game, including a season high five home runs.  They hit two homers in the second inning, one in the sixth and two in the seventh.  Johnson got the Cardinals started at the top of the order going 2-for-5 with three runs, an RBI and two stolen bases.  She also extended her hitting streak to 15 games which is the longest for the team in over eight seasons.

DuBois kept her big day going with two more home runs and four RBI's giving her 10 runs batted in for the doubleheader.  Miller went 2-for-5 with two runs and a stolen base and Alex Zepeda (Sinton/Sinton HS) drove in three while scoring twice.  In the 5-6-7 spots in the lineup, Alex Alonzo (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS), Swenson and Kristin Hebert (Humble/Atascocita HS) went a combined 7-for-12 with six runs, eight RBI's and three home runs.  Hebert also picked up the win with 4.1 innings of relief where she allowed five hits, one earned run and one walk while striking out three.

The Panthers also popped a pair of home runs in the game.  Jazmine Hicks hit one and drove in three runs while Destinee Williams was 2-for-3 with two runs and a homer.  Oliva Lacewell was handed the loss after giving up eight runs in 1.2 innings.

The Cardinals play Nicholls this weekend with a game on Friday at 5 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Cardinals Field.
