HOUSTON, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team dropped their series finale at Southland Conference rival Houston Baptist University, 7-0 on Saturday.
The loss kept the Cardinals (3-26, 0-12) winless in Southland Conference play this year.  The Huskies (9-19, 3-9) did not let the Cardinals hang around and put the game away early.

HBU scored five times in the bottom of the second inning.  All of the runs came with two outs as they had two on and two out when the dam burst.  After a hit by pitch, Nicole Shedd singled home the first run of the game and then Melissa Herman smacked a grand slam.

The Cardinals had their best chance to score in the top of the sixth inning.  Taylor Johnson (Schertz/Randolph HS) led off the inning with a single and stole second.  Alex Zepeda (Sinton/Sinton HS) followed with another single and Johnson tried to score, but she was thrown out at home.  HBU tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Sarah Leal (Kyle/Hays HS) was tagged with the loss for the Cardinals.  She allowed two runs in 1.2 innings of work.  Laci Belovsky pitched her second shutout of the series for the Huskies as she allowed four hits and a walk while striking out three.

The Huskies finished the game with 10 hits.  Shedd went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI's while Herman was 2-for-4 with four RBI's.

The Cardinals return home on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. doubleheader against Texas Southern.
