Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Jacks Cool Off Cardinals

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team had their three game winning streak snapped with a tough loss to Southland Conference rival Stephen F. Austin, 90-76 on Monday night at the McDermott Center.

The Lumberjacks (21-4, 11-1) came out strong after suffering their first conference loss of the season on Saturday to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.  SFA never let the Cardinals get closer than five points for most of the game.  They answered every Cardinals (15-7, 7-5) run with a big three-pointer or a conventional three-point play opportunity.

Midway through the second half the Cardinals had cut SFA's double-digit lead down to five points after a layup by Mitchell Badillo (Houston/Cy-Falls HS) with under 15 minutes to play.  The Lumberjacks responded with three-pointers on each of their next three possessions to take a 55-44 lead with 13:27 remaining.  Five minutes later, UIW pulled to within five points on a pair of free throws by Denzel Livingston (Houston/Waltrip HS).  This time it was Thomas Walkup who answered for the visitors by driving the baseline for a dunk and drawing a foul on the play.  That would be the closest the Cardinals would get.

The Cardinals shot 39.0 percent from the field, made 4-of-13 from three-point range and were 26-of-36 at the foul line.  Livingston struggled to shoot from the field going just 6-of-18, but still finished with 30 points and 11 rebounds thanks to a 17-for-19 performance at the charity stripe.  It was his third straight game with at least 30 points.  He reached a trio of milestones during the game.  He moved into third on the school's career scoring list with 1,602 points.  He also broke the school records for most free throws made in a season (156) and career (433).

Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) and Traylin Farris (Pearland/Manvel HS) each scored 12 points while Badillo dished out five assists.  The team only committed five turnovers in the game, but was out-rebounded by eight in the game.

Walkup led the Jacks with 28 points, eight rebounds and three assists. He had a terrific shooting night going 10-of-13 from the field and staying perfect from the free-throw line making all seven of his attempts.  The Lumberjacks were on fire for a big part of the game.  They shot 58.5 percent from the field, made 9-of-16 from three-point range and were 19-of-25 from the foul line. Ty Charles had 19 points and nine rebounds while Jacob Parker had 13 points and eight rebounds.

The Cardinals will look to bounce back Saturday when they face the Islanders from Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 4 p.m. at the McDermott Center.
