BROOKYLN, NEW YORK—The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team played a close game against LIU Brooklyn at the Barclays Center, but came up short by a score of 66-59 on Tuesday night.
The Blackbirds (6-4) led for the entire game except for 46 seconds when the Cardinals (4-6) took a one point lead early in the first half. Martin Hermannsson led LIU Brooklyn with 18 points, while shooting 4-of-11 from the field, but made nine of his 10 free throw attempts on the night. He added eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Jerome Frink finished 6-of-9 from the field for 14 points and also added eight rebounds for the Blackbirds, who actually were outshot by the Cardinals, 42 percent to 38 percent.
The game was a close affair throughout the contest. The Blackbirds only led 27-26 at halftime, but outscored the Cardinals 39-33 in the second half.
Both teams attempted exactly 55 shots on the night, with LIU Brooklyn making 21 of those shots, while UIW made 23. The big difference on the night came from the charity stripe. The Blackbirds made 19 of their 33 free-throw attempts, while the Cardinals only attempted 15 and made six.
Derail Green (Houston/Klein Forest HS) once again led in scoring for the Cardinals with 16 points, shooting 6-of-11 from the field, including two three pointers and was 2-for-2 in free-throws. He also added eight rebounds, one block and one steal.
Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) added 15 points, six rebounds and three assists in the loss while
Shawn Johnson (New Orleans, LA/Alief Hastings HS) continues to dominate the boards for UIW, grabbing 12 rebounds on the night along with nine points.
As a team, the Cardinals turned the ball over 21 times, which turned into 14 points for the home team. LIU Brooklyn committed 16 turnovers, which the Cardinals converted into 17 points.
The Cardinals, who are coming off a big upset win against St. Johns Friday night, will look to get back on track when they travel to Houston to face Rice on December 29 at 7 p.m. This will be the last game before starting conference play on January 2, against Sam Houston State at the McDermott Center at 4:30 p.m.
