ABILENE, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team was shutout on Thursday night at Southland Conference rival Abilene Christian University, 4-0.
The Cardinals (3-13-2, 1-7-2) could only manage three shots against the Wildcats (8-8-3, 7-2-2) who were able to put the game away with three second half goals. UIW freshman goalkeeper
Sydney Huntsinger (New Braunfels/Canyon HS) kept the team in the game with seven first half saves and she would finish with 14 saves on the evening.
The Wildcats took the lead in the 30th minute when Dylan Owens beat Huntsinger in a one-on-one situation from the right side of the box. The score remained 1-0 until just before the hour mark. Sophie Standifer beat two defenders at the top of the box and fired in a shot at 56:49. ACU tacked on a third goal when Chloe Fifer deposited Maria Gomez' corner kick into the back of the net in the 70th minute. The final goal came on a penalty kick by Rachel Shedd less than two minutes before the end of regulation.
Sydney Newton and Madeline Grimes combined on the shutout for ACU with Newton making two saves in 78 minutes of action. The Wildcats attempted 26 shots in the game.
The Cardinals will wait to find out if their season is over. It is still possible that UIW would have to play Sam Houston State on Sunday in San Antonio if the game would affect the Southland Conference playoff race.
