LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team traveled to Las Vegas for a Western Athletic Conference matchup and suffered their worst loss of the season, a 5-1 defeat to UNLV on Sunday at Johann Field.
The Cardinals (6-6, 2-4) were coming off a great 4-2 conference victory over Grand Canyon, but could not use that momentum to stop a strong UNLV squad that came out ready to play. The first half was pretty even, but a red card to UIW's
Alfredo Zendejas (El Paso/Vista Ridge HS) changed the dynamic of the entire game. The Rebels outshot UIW, 10-6 in the first half and scored one goal in the 29
th minute off the foot of Rodrigo Fuentes.
The Rebels (9-3-1, 3-1-1) took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but the second half was all in their favor. They took advantage of the Cardinals 10-men squad and ended up outshooting the Cardinals 20-9 in the game and found the back of the net four more times.
All five goals came from a different Rebel and the lone goal for the Cardinals came from a PK taken by
O'Neal Moore (Houston/Alief Taylor HS), who has now scored four goals on the season.
Danny Musovski scored his ninth goal of the season in the 53
rd minute and that got the Rebels' offense going. Andy Rodriguez, Corey Ackley and Oscar Velazquez all scored in the win.
The Cardinals are back home for two WAC games on Thursday against Houston Baptist at 7 p.m., and Sunday they host UT Rio Grande Valley at 6 p.m. UIW is 4-1 at home where they will try to bounce back from today's loss.
