LAKE CHARLES, LOUISIANA – The University of Incarnate Word women's soccer team will be taking the road for two road games this weekend. The first stop will be in Lake Charles to face the Cowgirls of McNeese State on Friday. UIW will then drive back to Texas to take on the rival Cardinals of Lamar in Beaumont on Sunday. Friday's game will begin at 7 p.m. while Sunday's will kick off at 1 p.m.
The Cardinals (3-10-1, 1-4-1) dropped a Southland Conference game to the Islanders of Corpus Christi last week, 1-0. An early goal in the second half proved too much for UIW. Even with several attempts to get back in the game, Incarnate Word was shutout.
The Cardinals offense has been stagnant lately, but freshman
Emani Stewart (Victorville, CA/Hesperia HS) and junior
Abigail Koenigs (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) lead the team with four goals apiece. Freshman
Sydney Huntsinger (New Braunfels/Canyon HS) has taken over as the team's starting goalkeeper and has allowed just one goal in 245 minutes of action.
The McNeese State Cowgirls (5-7, 2-4) won their last game against Nicholls to snap a 1-7 stretch. Bettina Brulhart is the team's leading scorer with three goals and three assists. Gabi D'Alesandro has two goals and four assists while Kayla Goedicke has three goals and an assist. Maggie Marks has started in goal recently, but Lauren Sestak has played the most minutes in goal. They have combined for a 1.43 goals against average and 67 saves.
Lamar (6-9, 2-4) is one of the top scoring teams in the conference, but they have also allowed a lot of goals. They have four players who have scored at least 10 points on the season. Jordan Mulnix leads the team with nine goals and three assists while Alexus Aviles has eight goals and an assists. Mari Olastuen has chipped in with four goals and eight assists. Lauren Lovejoy has started every game in goal and has a 2.32 goals against average while making 108 saves.
