SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – It was an exciting match for the University of Incarnate Word volleyball team at the McDermott Center on Saturday afternoon as they defeated visiting Southland Conference rival Lamar four sets 25-21, 26-28, 25-22, 25-18.
The Cardinals (4-11, 2-4) started the match with a balanced attack and six different players recorded at least one kill in the first set. As a team, UIW had 16 kills and only committed two errors which resulted in a .389 attacking percentage.
Angelique Vidaurri (San Antonio/Southwest HS) and
Autumn Lockley (Leander/Leander HS) led the Cardinals in the first set with a combined nine kills.
After the set loss, Lamar would respond in the second set with help from UIW in the form of seven attack errors and win the set 28-26 to tie the match at 1-1. Although the Cardinals managed to get 18 kills, they committed a match high seven errors in the second which led to a .234 attack percentage and a Lamar set victory.
Shaina Garza (San Antonio/Warren HS) was impressive in the set with seven kills to lead UIW.
The third set proved to be the most important in the match for both teams. The pivotal set was tied 21-21 when Lockley gave UIW the lead with a kill and Lamar would not be able to recover from that point on. After a service ace from
Jordan Reifsteck (Allen/Oswego East HS) gave the Cardinals a 23-22 lead, kills by Lockley and
Bryaunea Hall (Copperas Cove/Copperas Cove HS) put the set out of reach for Lamar and gave UIW a 25-22 set win and a 2-1 match advantage.
Starting out in the fourth set, UIW had all of the momentum and jumped out to an early 4-1 lead. However, Lamar would rally and take a 9-6 lead after a bad set by UIW which forced the Cardinals to take a timeout. After the timeout, the team came out focused and scored five straight to take a 22-14 lead. Hall had a powerful kill to cap off the day for UIW and give the Cardinals their second Southland victory of the season in the 3-1 win.
UIW had 62 kills, 54 digs and .302 attack. Lockley was the star performer for the Cardinals as she posted 20 kills with a .386 attack percentage. She was second on the team in digs with 13 to complete the double-double. Garza also had an outstanding match with 13 kills, no errors and a .500 attack. Vidaurri and Hall each had 11 kills and Hall lead the team with six blocks.
Taylor McClelland (Cypress/Cypress Ranch HS) and
Kaitlyn Brooks (Sugar Land/Fort Bend Austin HS) directed the offense with 24 and 20 assists, respectfully.
Lamar finished with 51 kills and a .211 attack. Chelsea Grant and Autumn Taylor each had 15 kills while Haley Morton dished out 44 assists. Lauren Stahlman led all players with 20 digs.
The Cardinals return to action on Thursday when they travel to Texas A&M- Corpus Christi in a conference matchup with a 6:30 p.m. start time.
