CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team will be on the road this week for two Southland Conference matchups. UIW will face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. and at Nicholls on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
The Cardinals are coming off two losses to Southeastern Louisiana and Abilene Christian last week, the former one coming in double overtime. UIW fell to ninth place in the Southland Conference after the two losses and now have a 2-4 record in the SLC and are 5-12 overall. They are averaging 61.4 points per game while allowing their opponents 69.4. The Cardinals are shooting 39 percent from the field and are averaging 12.8 assists per game.
Aricka Adams (Round Rock/Round Rock HS) leads the team 14.1 points per game and is shooting 43 percent from the field. Freshman
Jazmine Holman (Arlington/Arlington Bowie HS) has done an excellent job running the point guard spot for the Cardinals. She is filling up the stat sheet night after night. She averages 7.5 points, 4.6 rebounds 4.1 assists and 2.8 steals per game.
The Islanders currently rank third in the Southland Conference with a 5-2 SLC record and 9-9 overall. They have won three straight games but are only 4-5 at home. Junior guard Shay Weaver leads the team in scoring with 16.3 points per game and Olivia Fouty is second on the team with 13.6 points per game. As a team, the Islanders shoot 41 percent from the field and average 42.1 rebounds and 12.7 assists per game. Their defense ranks number one in the conference allowing only 58.1 points per game.
Nicholls is tied in fifth place with McNeese State with a 4-3 SLC record and they are 8-10 overall. They are coming off a 75-72 victory against Central Arkansas and are 4-2 at home where they will host the Cardinals. Jenny Nash leads the team in scoring and rebounding averaging 12.9 points and 5.9 rebounds per game while Emani White averages 12.0 points per game.
