Lions Win Thriller over Cardinals

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word dropped a 108-98 game in double overtime to visiting Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday in Southland Conference men's basketball action at the McDermott Center.

For the second straight Saturday, the Cardinals (9-5, 1-3) were unable to hold onto a 6-point lead in the final two minutes of regulation.  After trailing for most of the first 12 minutes of the second half, the Cardinals went on an 8-0 run capped by a Mitchell Badillo (Houston/Cy Falls HS) three-pointer with 6:42 left in regulation to take a 4-point lead.

The Lions (5-12, 2-2) got it back to a point on the next possession on a three-pointer by Zay Jackson.  The Cardinals got three key steals down the stretch and they went up by six points on a three-pointer by Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) with 3:17 to play in the half.  The lead was still six with two minutes to play, but the Lions were able to hang around.

The visitors got the ball with 12 seconds left down by three points and Joshua Filmore drained a 25-foot three-pointer with 3.3 seconds remaining to tie the game.  UIW would turnover the ball on the in-bounds pass and Jackson nearly won the game for SLU with a running layup attempt at the buzzer, but the ball fell off the rim.

In the first overtime period, the Lions led 90-85 with 2:16 to play when Denzel Livingston (Houston/Waltrip HS) put on his cape and brought the Cardinals back.  He drained a tough jumper with 1:57 left and then drained a three-pointer with 1:29 to play.  He had a chance to put UIW on top, but his three-pointer rattled out.  The Lions had a potential game-winning shot by Jackson waved off when it was ruled he shot the ball after the buzzer went off.

The Lions finally ran away with the game in the second overtime.  They hit three-pointers on the first two possessions and never led by fewer than five points.

The Cardinals had a tough shooting game as they went just 7-of-29 from three-point range and the Lions shot 58.7 percent from the field and made 12-of-22 from long range.  Overall, UIW shot 43.8 percent from the field and they were 21-of-26 at the foul line.  Livingston led the team with 27 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals.  Hittle poured in 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds while Badillo finished with 18 points, five rebounds and four assists.  Jontrell Walker (Aurora, IL/West Aurora HS) chipped in with 15 points.

The Lions went 37-of-63 from the field and were 22-of-31 at the foul line.  Jackson led the team with 25 points, nine assists, five rebounds and four steals.  Filmore added 22 points and drained four three-pointers while DeVonte Upson posted a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

It was the first loss for the Cardinals at home this year and they are now 19-2 at home over the past two seasons.  UIW is back in action on Saturday at Abilene Christian at 4 p.m.
