SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – In a tight contest, the University of the Incarnate Word Men's Tennis team came out on top against local rivals Trinity University on Saturday. The final score ended 5-4 to UIW.
In a break from Southland Conference action, the Cardinals (13-4) took the short trip to the Trinity University campus for a tightly contested matchup between old foes.
In doubles play, it was the Tigers who looked the stronger side, with Paxton Duel and Nicolas Moreno defeating UIW's
Leonard Ivic and
Josip Smoljan 8-5 at the No. 1 spot, while Charlie Curtis and Clayton Neiss defeated
Brandon Davis and
Antonio Cavazos 8-3 at No. 3.
Heading into singles play, the Cardinals pulled it out of the bag with the top four singles players defeating their opponents. At No. 3 singles, Smoljan allowed opponent Aaron Skinner to take only two games out of fourteen, with the final scores finishing 6-1, 6-1 to Smoljan.
After
Jair Assuncao and Ivic both secured wins at No. 1 and No. 2, and Tigers players Jordan Mayer and Charlie Curtis won No. 5 and No. 6 singles, the match was tied at 4-4 and the contest came down to the final match still in play.
At No. 4 singles,
Brandon Davis fought to defeat Nicolas Moreno in a tie break after three close sets. The final result ended 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (10-8) and UIW took their 13
th win of the season.
The Cardinals are back in action Thursday when they take on Southland Conference rivals Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 3 p.m.
