CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's tennis team was defeated 6-1 on Thursday afternoon by Southland Conference rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
The Cardinals (13-5, 1-3) were a little unlucky losing a pair of three-set matches, but overall it was the Islanders' (14-9, 3-0) day. A&M-Corpus Christi picked up a valuable point in doubles action getting 8-3 wins from their No. 2 and No. 3 teams. Only the No. 1 squad of Leo Ivic (Split, Croatia) and Josip Smoljan (Citluk, Bosnia) were able to win for the Cardinals, 8-3.
The Islanders put the match away quickly in singles play. They won the first three matches to finish off the Cardinals. Paul Cook at No.6, Guillaume Rauseo at No. 5 and Peter Nagy at No. 1 all won their matches in straight sets.
Smoljan won his match at No.3 singles for UIW by a 6-4, 6-1 margin. Ivic lost a heartbreaker at No. 2, 6-3, 5-7, 10-7 and Tucker Brown (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) lost in the same fashion 6-7 (5), 6-3, 10-8.
The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday at Oral Roberts.
