UIW Tennis Swept by ACU

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word tennis teams hosted Southland Conference rival Abilene Christian University on Sunday afternoon at the Mabry Tennis Center.  The women lost, 7-0 while the men lost, 4-3.

The UIW women could not get anything going against the Wildcats and they dropped their first conference match of the year.  The Wildcats won the first two doubles matches to earn the first point of the match and then only dropped 13 games in the singles matches.

The men's match was completely different with both teams matching up evenly.  It came down to a few crucial points over a number of different matches.

The one point awarded for doubles was hotly contested.  All three matches went to a tie-break.  Borja Cortes and Guilherme Gesser won at the #1 spot for ACU, 7-5 in the tie-breaker.  The Cardinals evened it up at #2 doubles when Tucker Brown and Jair Assucao won, 7-5 in their tie-breaker.  At #3 doubles, ACU's Michael Morris and Marco Bensley knocked off Brandon Davis and Antonio Cavazos, 7-4 in the tie-break to take the point.

The Cardinals got things started off on the right foot in singles play getting wins from Assuncao, Leo Ivic and Josip Smoljan at #1, #2 and #3 singles, respectively.  Each won in straight sets.

Likewise, the Wildcats took matches at #5 and #6 singles with Nico Agritelley and Bensley each won in straight sets.  The final match was at #4 singles where Gesser topped Brown in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Both UIW teams are back in action on Saturday.  The men travel to UTSA while the women travel to Northwestern State.
