SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word tennis teams were on the road on Sunday. The women lost at Southland Conference rival McNeese State, 7-0 while the men defeated Southland rival New Orleans, 5-2.
The UIW women struggled against the Cowgirls and did not win a set.
Taryn Strahl (San Antonio/Churchill HS) had the best performance losing 6-4, 6-1 to Vivien Borbely at No. 4 singles.
The UIW men improved to 11-4 on the season and 1-2 in the conference. They notched their first SLC victory thanks to a dominating performance in singles play.
The Privateers jumped out to an early lead over the Cardinals by taking 2-of-3 doubles matches. Chris Appelgren and Ruia Silva won at No. 2 while Gonzalo Garcia and Luis Albuquerque won at No. 3.
The Cardinals got rolling in the singles play.
Jair Assuncao (Londrina, Brazil/Carmina Grabner) knocked off Timo Kranz at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-1 and
Josip Smoljan (Citluk, Bosnia and Herzegovinia) won at No. 3 by the same score. After
Brandon Davis (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) defeated Albuquerque, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5, UIW led 3-2.
The match came down to the No. 2 and No. 4 singles matches. Both matches went to a third set and the Cardinals came out on top in each. Leo Ivic (Split, Croatia) took the No. 2 match, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 while
Tucker Brown (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) won at No. 4, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5.
Both UIW teams are back in action on Thursday at home against Laredo Community College.
