THIBODAUX, LA – The University of the Incarnate Word tennis teams were both handed defeats by Southland Conference rival Nicholls State University on Saturday. The women lost 7-0 and the men lost 5-2. Later in the day, the women lost at New Orleans, 6-1.
The UIW men's team pulled out only two wins that were in singles play.
Josip Smoljan displayed another strong performance and defeated Lukas Clemens 6-2, 6-2 at #3 singles and
Tucker Brown won 6-3, 6-0 against Sam Meessen at #5 singles.
In doubles play
Jair Assuncao and
Tucker Brown came close to winning a third game after tying the first set 7-7. The tie-breaker ended unfinished at 3-0 after both the other doubles matches were won by the Colonels.
For the women, a 7-0 sweep took the Cardinals to a fifth straight loss in the Southland Conference. Together the team won 17 games with #3 singles player
Jennifer Betancourt putting out the strongest performance losing 5-7, 2-6 against Kateryna Nakonechna.
The UIW women also took a loss against the Privateers.
Sarah Savedra picked up the lone point for the Cardinals with a 6-3, 6-3 win at #1 singles.
The UIW men are back in action on Sunday at New Orleans at 11 a.m. The women will play at McNeese State on Sunday at 11 a.m.
